“Why don’t you showcase your strengths?”
My manager’s simple advice helped establish my sales style
I joined Philip Morris Japan as a sales representative upon finishing graduate school in the U.S. I was frustrated with myself for struggling to deliver notable results, despite receiving support from people around me. That is when my manager asked me what my strength was to which I answered, “Analysis. I learned analysis in college.” Then he said, “Why don’t you showcase your strengths?” As such, I asked my storeowner to show me the sales data to analyze it in detail for a new merchandizing plan. The plan contributed to a large sales increase and later did the same for other stores. Several years later, the current sales representative of the area said to me “The storeowner still talks about you and what you did for the business.” The pleasure of being remembered for what I did is priceless.
Difficulty of creating “1” from “0”
This experience has strengthen my capabilities.
In my 7th year at Philip Morris Japan, I was assigned to the IQOS startup project. To be honest, I was anxious at first. It was a completely new category and I was concerned that I would not be able to handle the project. During the course of the project, I consulted with my sales colleagues resulting at times in difference of opinions. This led me to a series of questions, “What should I prepare to convince them? Can I stay resilient and tenacious? How do I motivate the team?” In the process, I learned a lot about building a good work relationship and how to manage different situations. Looking back, I feel how inexperienced I was, for feeling so anxious about jumping into this opportunity. This experience was a key to my personal growth and now I am in a position to lead a team.
Never felt restricted as a woman in this working environment
I have never been conscious of being a woman at my workplace. Rather, I am in an environment where I can fairly compete with men. Most companies provide maternity leave and child-care leave. But what makes Philip Morris Japan special is you are strongly encouraged to take advantage of these leaves and you can return to the same position you held or an equivalent position. It is a female-friendly company where you can have a lifelong career. As for my own career aspirations, I want to be in a position to look after larger operations. There is a good number of male and female professionals around me serving as great role models making up a fantastic environment.
